Week 1 recap

Team The Label Says Paleo… it’s time for our week 1 recap! Post to comments your progress and realizations this week?

We had a great dinner on Thursday, and an awesome brunch on Sunday.  The site peaked at over 300 views one day this week.

My week?

  • Sunbutter Organic is totally different (and doesn’t taste as awesome) from Sunbutter “crunchy.”
  • Raw fake cheesecake from Whole Foods is NOT paleo.
  • Neither is Agave Nectar.
  • Never change your diet the week of a race (and if you do, remember to eat very well and according to your nutrition plans).
  • The Austin Airport has good food, but you have to be careful.
  • Thank God there’s a grocery store that’s vaguely in walking distance from my hotel in San Diego.

Happy clean eating!

  1. My Week 1 Realizations:

-Meal planning and preparation is essential if I am going to eat paleo during the day.

-It’s much easier to say no to dessert during a challenge like this than it is on any normal day.

-READ every label. So many foods have sugar, or some form of sugar.

-Dining out paleo is doable, but you have to be willing to ask questions, change the menu to fit your specifications, and trust that your waiter is telling the truth.

-I’m starting to see a change in my energy level- more consistently high throughout the day, then a definite drop to tell me it is bed time.

-Supportive friends make all the difference.

  2. Check out the Naked Cafe in San Diego, easy to do paleo and so freaking good!

  3. My week 1:

    - Coconut comes in water, oil, butter, flakes, etc. I’m in a constant state of vacation bliss at any given point in time. I LOVE cocounut!

    - I can have a great time, and still dance up a storm, sans vodka/soda. Actually, I might have had a better time.

    - It’s really easy to eat clean…when you don’t go out to eat. I only ate from my own or a paleo-friend’s kitchen this week.

    - My energy levels have varied day to day. After talking to people further along in this journey, I’ve learned that it’s just something I’m gonna have to ride out and that it will eventually level off in happyland.

    - I’m not hungry. I’m satisfied and happy.

    - Making good/healthy decisions on Saturday meant I made it to Mass on Sunday…healthy in body & spirit!

  4. - I feel skinnier already! I hope it lasts …

    - I feel like I’ve faced the worst of it — eating out and going out to bars with my non-Paleo friend for the entire last week, and choosing NOT to have what she was having — and am so ready for the easy weeks ahead!

    - It really is easy to eat Paleo at home. Why can’t more restaurants offer Paleo options??

    - Need to check out Beets and Borboleta (raw cafes)

    - I’m bringing Fudge Babies to Thanksgiving

  5. Week 1 was not as bad as I expected it to be as I was close to 85% Paleo before the challenge

My energy levels have been all over the place and I realize I need more than the 6 hours of sleep I’m currently getting

I miss my 2 small pieces of Endangered Species Extreme Dark Chocolate that was a staple most afternoons – I seem to be doing fine going off the rest of the crack aka Chocolate Cliff Builder Bars & Chocolate Muscle Milk. See the Chocolate Theme – I’ve been trying to get creative to get my chocolate fix – more on that in separate blog post.

I’ve not missed my three weekly cheats/treats – Taco Deli Bison and Mojo Fish Tacos, Bombay Express Special Meal and Sushi night …. for now :)

I seem to be in grocery stores every other day replenishing my stocks or picking up new ingredients to try new Paleo recipes

The challenge has forced me to spend more time in the kitchen than I have in a long time :)

Week 2 and 3 are going to be challenging as I’m criss-crossing the country to attend a wedding in the North East followed by an extended family reunion in Vegas before flying home for Thanksgiving. Eating Paleo is going to be a huge challenge on the road especially when I don’t have a choice on where we get to eat – I’ll keep y’all posted.

  6. Bombay Express was what I missed most when I was eating as close to Paleo as possible (modified cause I’m vegetarian) !!! Best non-home cooked Indian food in Austin! And I can walk there….it is dangerous.
